However, woven throughout the psalm is another beautiful theme: the steadfast love of God.

The Hebrew word usually translated “steadfast love” is hesed. It describes God’s loyal, covenant-keeping love—a love that is faithful, unfailing, merciful, and committed. It is not based on our worthiness but on God’s character and promises.

In Psalm 119, the psalmist repeatedly appeals to God’s steadfast love:

Psalm 119:41 — “Let Your steadfast love come to me, O LORD, Your salvation according to Your promise.”

Psalm 119:76 — “Let Your steadfast love comfort me according to Your promise to Your servant.”

Psalm 119:88 — “In Your steadfast love give me life, that I may keep the testimonies of Your mouth.”

Psalm 119:124 — “Deal with Your servant according to Your steadfast love.”

Psalm 119:149 — “Hear my voice according to Your steadfast love.”

Psalm 119:159 — “Give me life according to Your steadfast love.”

What is striking is that the psalmist does not just admire God’s steadfast love—he depends on it. He asks for salvation, comfort, life, mercy, and answered prayer on the basis of God’s steadfast love.

I believe Psalm 119 teaches us that God’s Word and God’s steadfast love are inseparable. The promises of Scripture are trustworthy because they flow from a God whose love never changes. Every command, warning, promise, and act of correction comes from the heart of a Father who is steadfast in His love.

The LORD is my portion - Psalm 119:57

https://www.bmccullers.com/bloghome/the-lord-is-my-portion-psalm-11957

https://www.bmccullers.com/bloghome/the-lord-is-my-portion-psalm-11957#comments

Uncategorized

Today I paused over Psalm 119:57: “The LORD is my portion.” In a world that constantly encourages me to find security in possessions, accomplishments, relationships, or plans, this verse redirects my heart to the only inheritance that can never be lost. Instead of resting in God’s protection, he placed confidence in numbers and military strength. As a result, judgment came upon the nation in the form of a devastating plague.

The angel of the Lord was at Ornan’s threshing floor ready to destroy Jerusalem. Ornan and his sons actually saw the angel standing there with drawn sword, and they hid themselves in fear while threshing wheat. Imagine the weight of that moment. The threshing floor had become a place marked by both the seriousness of judgment and the nearness of God’s presence. Yet even in the midst of discipline, God’s mercy was present — He paused the angel.

Then God commanded David, through the prophet Gad, to go to that very place and build an altar to the Lord. I find that deeply meaningful. God did not randomly choose the location. He intentionally directed David to the very spot where judgment had paused and where the angel stood. A common work site where grain was separated from chaff became a sacred meeting place between God and man.

The imagery feels intentional. Just as threshing separates wheat from chaff, this moment exposed the heart of David and the nation. Yet instead of complete destruction, God provided a way for mercy through sacrifice and worship.

When David arrived, Ornan generously offered to give him everything needed for the sacrifice: the land, the oxen, the wood, and the wheat. But David refused to offer the Lord something that cost him nothing. He declared, “I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God which cost me nothing.”

That statement reveals something powerful about true worship. Genuine worship is not simply convenience or leftover devotion. Worship involves surrender, sacrifice, and giving something of value to God. David understood that repentance was more than words — it required a response of obedience and humility.

After David built the altar and offered sacrifices, God answered with fire from heaven consuming the offering. Throughout Scripture, fire from heaven often symbolizes God’s acceptance. In that moment, judgment stopped and mercy prevailed. The angel sheathed his sword, and peace was restored.

What makes this passage even more remarkable is that this very location later became the site of Solomon’s Temple on Mount Moriah. The place where judgment was halted became the place where generations would come to worship God.

That truth deeply encourages me. God has a way of redeeming broken places. Areas marked by failure, weakness, or pain can become places where His mercy and presence are most clearly seen. David’s failure did not have the final word. God’s grace did.

This passage also points forward to the greater work of Christ. David stood between judgment and the people, interceding for mercy. In an even greater way, Jesus stood in our place, bearing judgment so that we could receive forgiveness and peace with God.

One of the most beautiful themes in this chapter is this: where the sword of judgment stopped, the house of worship began.
