The Tension

2/14/2026

As I’ve been reading through Scripture, I’ve noticed a tension that keeps surfacing in my heart.

On one hand, God is described as perfectly holy — completely pure, morally flawless, utterly unlike sin. His holiness isn’t just something He chooses; it’s who He is. Because of that, sin cannot exist comfortably in His presence. It’s not that God is fragile or easily offended. It’s that holiness and sin are opposites. I keep picturing darkness in direct sunlight — it simply doesn’t survive there.

And yet, on the other hand, God repeatedly invites sinners to come to Him.

How can both be true?

When I look at Scripture, I see that whenever sinful humanity encounters God’s unveiled holiness, the response is never casual fellowship. Adam and Eve hide. Israel trembles at Sinai. Isaiah cries out, “Woe is me!” Moses is told he cannot see God’s face fully and live. The issue isn’t distance — it’s condition. The problem isn’t that God refuses people. The problem is that sin cannot survive in His presence.

And still… He tells us to come.

At first that feels contradictory. But the more I sit with it, the more I see that it’s actually the solution. God never says, “Clean yourself up and then come.” Instead, He says, “Come so I can clean you.”

From the sacrifices in Leviticus to the cross, the pattern is consistent:
  • The sinner approaches.
  • God provides cleansing.
  • Fellowship becomes possible.

The invitation is not, “Enter My presence as you are and remain unchanged.”
It is, “Come to Me so you won’t remain as you are.”

God does not tolerate sin — but He welcomes sinners for the purpose of removing sin. Holiness rejects corruption. Mercy provides cleansing. These truths don’t contradict each other; they describe a process.

In the Old Testament, people didn’t casually walk into God’s presence carrying their sin. They brought a sacrifice — something that symbolically carried the sin away. In the New Testament, Christ becomes that sacrifice once and for all. So now when I bring my sin to God, I’m not coming alone. I’m coming through the One who takes it away.

God is not a courtroom where criminals are allowed to linger in guilt. He is a hospital where the sick are invited — because He intends to heal them.

The difference is this: God cannot have fellowship with sin. So He invites us to bring our sin to Him so He can remove what separates us. His holiness is why I cannot stay as I am. His love is why He asks me to come anyway.

And the order matters.
  • I don’t come because I’m clean.
  • I come so He can make me clean.
  • Then fellowship becomes possible.

When someone brings sin to God, something beautiful happens. First, confession — I stop hiding and agree with Him about my sin. Then cleansing — He forgives and removes the guilt. And finally, fellowship — relationship is restored, not avoided.
  • Holiness blocks sin.
  • Mercy removes sin.
  • Relationship follows.

If God only hated sin, I would run away.
If He only accepted me as I am, sin would eventually destroy me.

Instead, He loves me too much to leave me sinful — and too much to reject me because I am.

When I come to Him with my sin, I’m not entering His presence to stay the same. I’m entering His presence to be changed. And once the sin is dealt with, fellowship can flourish.

Not tolerance.
Not rejection.
Transformation.
