Don't believe the lies
Artist Roy Lichtenstein~Pop Art

Mrs. McCullers Art Adventures Summer Online Art Camp 2018 Facebook Group

Written Lesson~Don't believe the lies~Artist Roy Lichtenstein~Pop Art

American artist Roy Lichtenstein's ("LIK" + "tuhn" + "styn") son saw a cartoon picture and bet his dad he couldn't paint as good as that. That comment led to Lichtenstein's fascination with comics and cartoons. His paintings began to imitate the look of the printing process that was used to print comics. Sometimes Lichtenstein would use scenes from real comic books, but he would paint them very large and recreate them in his own style. Often times, he would even include speech bubbles and comic book words. You might say his art looks as if he took a photograph of a comic book page and enlarged it and hung it on the wall.  Here are a few examples of his art.
There are a few things you should notice about Mr. Lichtenstein's art.
  • He used bold black outlines and bright colors, mostly the primary colors--red, blue, and yellow.
  • He used dot patterns, like a printer would make,
  • He often used comic book words and speech bubbles.
When I look at Lichtenstein's art, I am drawn to the large words, so I decided it would be fun for us to create a piece of art using a large word.  The question is, what word? This is what I came up with.

I don't know about you but sometimes it is easy for me to caught up in wrong thinking. For example, when I was in elementary school I remember bringing my report card home one time and thinking it was pretty good. When my dad looked at it he said something like, "Wow, great job Bren. You definitely worked hard this marking period. You almost got all A's."

I heard, "Bren, you are stupid. If you were smart, you would have gotten all A's." Of course, my dad never called me stupid, but Satan deceived me into thinking that was what he said. That is how Satan works, he likes to twist things around. That's why it is always important to ask God to help us see things the way He sees them. So I thought it would be fun to sit quietly for a minute and ask God to share with us, one word describing how He sees us.

Take a minute and pray this prayer: God, how am I caught up in wrong thinking? What one word will help me see myself the way you see me?

Supplies

  • paper
  • pencil and eraser
  • Black sharpie
  • markers, colored pencils, and/or crayons

Instructions

You are going to create a piece of art in the style of Roy Lichtenstein.

  • Write "your word" in Bubble letters in the middle of your paper. You can use a pencil and then trace over your pencil lines with a black sharpie. Click here for a printout to help with Bubble letters. If you still need help, you might ask your parent or sibling to draw your letters for you.
  • Use a black sharpie to draw lines, squiggles, or other action designs around your word. Look at Lichenstein's word art--POP, POW, VAROOM for ideas.
  • Use crayons or markers to add color to your design. Remember, you can add dots, lines, or solid areas of color in your design.
  • Take a picture of your art and post it to our Facebook group page.
  • Hang your art in a place where you will see it everyday to remind you of the way God sees you.

I like to pretend that my art has nothing to do with me."
