Pass Me a Cup Please
Artist Cheeming Boey~Cup Art

Written Lesson: Pass Me a Cup Please~Artist Cheeming Boey~Cup Art

Cheeming Boey is a game designer, animator, and author but, he is most know for his sharpie designs on styrofoam cups.  Boey chose styrofoam cups simply because they were availability. He was at a coffee shop one day and wanted to sketch but he didn't have his sketchbook with him. He found a styrofoam cup on the top of a trash can and decided to use it. He liked how the cup turned out so much that he continued use cups for his canvas. Here are a few examples of his art.
There are a few things you should notice about Boey's art:
  • He gets ideas for his art from things he sees around him everyday.
  • He doesn't sketch an idea in pencil first. He thinks about what he is going to draw and then goes for it with his sharpie.
  • Some of his drawings are detailed and complex, a few even have color, some are simple.
  • He uses lines, dots, dashes, and sometimes he fills in areas completely.
  • He starts with one small part, like a face, and works his way around the cup.
I love how God provides for us in unusual ways. Boey could have said forget it and not drawn anything that day. But he didn't, and today his cups are on display in museums and sell for hundreds of dollars, sometimes even over $1,000.
