Recycled & repurposed
VPK artists explored and experimented with recycling and re-purposing materials. We talked about the saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure" and how some artists, like Robert Rauschenberg, incorporated discarded objects including newspapers, magazine pages and glass bottles, into their artwork. In doing so, he prevented these materials from winding up in landfills and gave them new life as Art!
We read the book "Beautiful Oops!" and discussed if artists should throw away their mistakes, like torn or stained sheets of paper, or if they could try to find creative ways to use them. Students then created the incredible fall foliage paintings from recycled paper, cardboard, and crunched up paper paintbrushes.
